Designer Handbag Trends: Spring/Summer 2008
Straight from the Runway
Clutches and frame top bags, messenger-style totes, large weekend carry-alls.
Bright, bold oversized hobos, bags that are suitable for traveling, such as oversized totes and duffels in yellow, green, red, and bright blue.
Unconventional color combinations.
Black and white frame bags. Look for black and white in all styles of bag this season. Doctor bags are popular.
Exotic clutches: Oversized clutches with removable straps; animal skins such as printed leopard, and genuine snake skin; embossed leathers and metallic prints.
Alligator and crocodile continue to be strong.
Candy colored handbags:
Pink…Pink…Pink… for spring and summer in clutches, totes, hobos, and wallets. Also popular are red, orange, and yellow.
Camel and black combos in oversized clutches, weekender bags, and some minaudieres.
Crocodile and snake in oversized totes, either the real skins or tapestry versions in various playful colors and combinations: pink/brown, camel/black, black/white, and red/orange. Look for giant totes in crisp black and white.
Textured, embossed leathers, lively printed florals: both leather and fabric.
Across the shoulder bags, messenger bags and totes.
Anything in leopard print: apparel and handbags.
Clutches in: leather, fabric, fur, quilted, embroidered, beaded, vintage.
Color Trends:
Bright purple, and various shades of purple, such as lavender and deep violet are ubiquitous, hot, hot for spring and summer.
Silver grey is the new neutral for spring. Camel is the other neutral. Both are “must have” colors for spring. They can be teemed with anything.
Metallics are still hot: silver, gold, copper, pale green.
Bright blue, such as Snorkel Blue from the Pantone Color System. Snorkel is the new navy.
Rococco Red, which is really a bright pink. Also from Pantone.
Pink Mist: subtle delicate pink with blue undertones. Another Pantone color.
Yellows, pinks, and lilacs: the color of crocuses and freesias.
Golden olive.
